Sunday's Hymn: Awake, My Soul

Awake, my soul, stretch ev'ry nerve,
And press with vigor on;
A heav'nly race demands thy zeal,
And an immortal crown.

A cloud of witnesses around
Hold thee in full survey;
Forget the steps already trod,
And onward urge thy way.

'Tis God's all-animating voice
That calls thee from on high;
'Tis his own hand presents the prize
To thine aspiring eye.

That prize with peerless glories bright,
Which shall new lustre boast,
When victors' wreaths and monarch's gems
Shall blend in common dust.

Blest Saviour, introduced by thee,
Have I my race begun;
And, crowned with vict'ry, at thy feet
I'll lay my honors down.

Philip Doddridge, 1755
Tune: Christmas, George Frederick Handel, 1728

I'm really hoping for some honors to be able to lay at Jesus' feet!
Happy Sunday Dorothy...

Awake, my soul, stretch ev'ry nerve...! What a loud and clear call, and so fitting to thoughts that have been filling my mind lately. God help me to respond zealously!

I like Doddrige's encouragement to "stretch ev'ry nerve and press with vigor on."

Such encouragement to run this race with vigor, Dorothy! Thank you for sharing this one. I'm off to see if it's in our hymnal. What a wonderful one to teach our children. Much love to you!

A beautiful hymn! Thank you for sharing; I have needed the exhortation to stretch and press on with vigor! Yes, Lord, may we run with eager perseverance!
