Poinsettia in May

This poinsettia sits in front of the window by the table in my kitchen. I took this shot two days ago. That would be May 20, 2009. May 20th! Kim gave me this plant when she and Tom and the boys joined us for Thanksgiving this past November. That means I've enjoyed those brilliant red bracts for six months now! I've never before managed to keep a poinsettia past...oh, maybe not even up until St. Patrick's Day. And really, I've not done anything in particular to keep this one. Just the usual watering and a bit of fertilizer now and again. So I am amazed!

Have any of you kept a poinsettia beyond six months? Got any secret tips for me? If so, please share. I'm wondering if I can keep this plant going until next Thanksgiving...even Christmas, perhaps.

I think that poinsettia looks better now than it did in November!

It likes hanging out in your kitchen--so do I!!

How do you keep it so long? Mine always end up biting the dust in the middle of January.

Mine doesn't look quite as beautiful, sporting only a single red leaf. Currently it sits out on the deck but I may put it in the ground and let it grow through the summer here in Iowa.

Wow! It looks great, Dorothy. If I try to keep one, say from Christmas, it almost always gets fruit flies (or something) and I get so fed up that I put it out in the snow to die a cold and lonely death...

My recommendation: move to Southern California and you will have huge poinsettia bushes growing wild in the garden.

As far as keeping poinsettias in the house--no idea. When I lived in Oregon I couldn't keep them February either.
